Overview

The Hospitality Foundation 100 Program at Glenn College provides students with foundational knowledge of North American business culture, basic business English skills, and an introduction to the hospitality industry. This program prepares students for entry-level positions in the hospitality sector and strengthens their communication skills for workplace integration. It combines classroom learning with practical co-op work experience to reinforce the theories and concepts taught.

Topics/Learning Objectives

  • List and explain key areas and types of businesses.
  • Recognize common business English expressions, idioms, and vocabulary.
  • Conduct business communications such as formal emails, meeting agendas, and professional phone calls.
  • Understand and apply ethical decision-making in business situations.
  • Demonstrate basic interviewing skills appropriate for work settings.
  • Describe the structure and organization of lodging and food service industries.
  • Identify functional areas of hospitality operations and explain their responsibilities.
  • Analyze the importance of each hospitality division in achieving business objectives.

General Admission Requirements

  • Minimum 18 years old
  • Completion of one of the following:
    • Glenn College’s Online TESOL Program

Language Proficiency Requirements

Applicants must demonstrate English proficiency through one of the following:

  • BC English 12 with a minimum C+ grade
  • IELTS 5.5
  • TOEFL iBT 46–59
  • Duolingo English Test score of 95–100

 

Note: Written in-house tests are not used to determine admission eligibility.

  • Weekly quizzes and assignments
  • Individual and group projects
  • Final exams for Business English and Hospitality modules
  • Student Performance Evaluation from co-op placement supervisors
  • Final Work Experience Report by the student
  • 70% minimum attendance
  • Minimum 70% grade in each academic component
  • Successful completion of 280-hour co-op work placement
  • Total Instructional Hours: 280 hours (in-class)
  • Work Experience Hours: 280 hours (co-op)
  • Total Program Hours: 560 hours over approximately 24 weeks (6 months)

Homework Hours

  • 10–15 hours per week
