Overview

This program is for students who plan to be or are currently in the health field and want to improve their English skills within medical field. Students have the option to take one, two, or all of the courses in this program. Each course focuses on a specific area of the health industry; Communication with Patients, Common Symptoms and Sicknesses, and Important Medical Terminology. These courses have been designed to facilitate for better communication and understanding with patients and others in the health and medical field.

Each course is broken into four modules with each module having two lessons.
Each course has a quiz after each module, a cumulative midterm, and a final test. The final test is cumulative test of modules three and four.

Topics/Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of the Medical English program, students will be able to:

  • Recognize and employ English words and phrases used to describe common symptoms and illnesses

  • Identify a variety of illnesses using English medical terminology relating to symptoms

  • Correctly utilize essential vocabulary for body parts, nutrition, medical equipment and apparatuses, and hospital wards

  • Demonstrate competency in communicating with a variety of patients and others in the health and medical field

  • Recognize and use terminology related to pharmaceuticals and treatment

At the end of Glenn College Hospitality Management Diploma Program, students will be able to demonstrate a knowledge of management operations in the hospitality industry; including food and beverage, financial management, supervision and leadership, human resources, housekeeping, marketing and sales.

Methods of Evaluation

Each course in the Medical English program evaluates students with the following:

  1. Module quizzes (10% per module)
  2. A midterm (20%)
  3. A final test (20%)
  4. A final assignment (20%)

Delivery Method

Students have the option of taking this program online or in person.

Teaching Method

Both the in-person and online formats of the program will be conducted in a lecture format.

Program Duration

Total Program hours: 240

The Medical English program involves 3 courses – each subject specific and lasting a total of 80 hours. The duration to complete each course is 4 weeks from the start date, totalling 12 weeks for the entire program.

Admissions Requirements

Proof of English proficiency through one of the following:

  • BC English 12 with a minimum C+ grade
  • IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL band 46 – 59 or TOEC band 605 – 780
  • Glenn College/ Global College English Proficiency Test with a 70% minimum.

Graduation and Accreditation Requirements

  • Graduation
    For successful completion, the overall mark for this program must be a minimum of 70%.
  • Accreditation
    Students upon successful completion of each course (a minimum overall mark of 70%) will be granted a certificate as well as receive a Letter of Acceptance (LOA).
